STEM OPT will continue to be valid (for now, I mean)

F-1 students can keep using their non-expired STEM OPT till May 10, 2016. There is hope that they can get into this year’s H1B lottery which is on April 1, 2016. For more details, please check with http://www.nafsa.org/Find_Resources/Supporting_International_Students_And_Scholars/ISS_Issues/Issues/Focus_On_STEM_OPT/

The U.S. District Court has just granted the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s motion to extend the current STEM OPT rule until May 10, 2016.

This decision is a win for F-1s using their 17-month EAD extension and their employers, because previously issued STEM OPT EADs will continue to be valid, and USCIS will continue to accept STEM OPT EAD applications, until May 10th.  We are confident DHS will complete its rule making and publish a final rule to permanently reinstitute STEM EAD extensions before the May 10th deadline.

2015 H1B visa rank and the average salary battle

As you might have known, the top 3 H1B visa sponsors in 2015 are Indian Consulting companies (all come from India, again!): Infosys, TCS and Wipro, and these 3 companies have 46277 visas which is 54% of H1B visa quota this year!.

The average salary is about 70k USD per year in the top 3 companies. But wait, what is the average H1B salary for these top american companies? Google has 125k USD and Microsoft has 116k USD, which are 78% and 65% higher than that 70K USD from these Indian Consulting companies. Unfortunately Google only has 3056 H1B visas and Microsoft 3750, which are 10x less than Infosys+TCS+Wipro. What does it mean? If you are a smart guy who can have a job offer from Google or Microsoft (125K or 116K USD on average), you might have to quit Google/Microsoft and choose Infosys, Tata or Wipro for 70K USD: you have 10x less chance for getting a visa in Google or Microsoft!

What a pity for American companies who want true high skilled workers! What a pity for true talented engineers who have to quit Google/MIcrosoft and choose Infosys, TCS and Wipro for a visa!

A Tool For Analyzing H-1B Visa Applications Reveals Tech Salary Secrets

To read more about why Indian Consulting companies can pay very low salaries to their IT consultants, please go to http://developers.slashdot.org/story/15/05/28/1541246/a-tool-for-analyzing-h-1b-visa-applications-reveals-tech-salary-secrets

“If the title says ‘consultant’, instead of $130,000 you might pay $60,000, the gap is that big.”

Tekla Perry writes:The golden age of engineers is not over,’ says a French software engineer who developed a tool for mining U.S. Department of Labor visa application data, but, he says, salaries appear to be leveling off. Indeed, salary inflation for software engineers and other technical professionals at Google and Facebook has slowed dramatically, according to his database, and Airbnb and Dropbox pay is down a little, though Netflix pay is through the roof. The data also shows that some large companies appear to be playing games with titles to deflate salaries, and Microsoft is finally offering technology professionals comparable salaries to Apple and Google. There’s a lot more to be discovered in this interactive database, and researchers are getting ready to mine it.

H1b visas are dominated by ICC like infosys!

Quick question: which company files the most H1B visas in 2015? Google or Facebook?

People may think the company must be one of these great American IT companies, like Google or Facebook. Data tell you are wrong! From the official list of number of LCAs per company http://data.jobsintech.io/companies/infosys-limited , one can see these Indian Consulting Companies (ICCs) like Infosys, Tata consulting, Wipro are dominated H1b visas. In 2015, infosys has 23k certified H1b LCAs where the total number of H1b in 2015 is 85k (the maximum H1b cap). Can you imagine that a single company can have almost 30% of all H1b visas?

Companies like infosys also lower down the market average salary, for everyone! Infosys’ average salary for 2015 H1B petitions is 76k USD where most of them are software engineers. Google’s average software engineer salary in 2015 is about 128k USD which is 68% higher than Infosys, according to google search. Unfortunately, google can’t beat infosys in the H1B visa lottery battle. If you are a smart software engineer who can get a google job offer of 128k USD, but google unfortunately can’t get a H1B visa for you because most H1Bs go to Infosys, and you have to choose infosys’s 76k USD for having a H1B visa. Infosys uses low salary for being price-competitive in the consulting market, but many talent software engineers have to accept the low salary and work for infosys because of H1B visa. In the end, American companies like Google who can offer high salary can’t not have these talented engineers, but Indian Consulting Companies (ICC) like infosys get all these talented engineers with much lower price.

Think of Walmart: Walmart has cheap products made in China, Thailand or other cheap-labor countries, and it kills all local US factories. Fortunately, Walmart is an American company, and the profit stays in the US. Now Infosys is the new Walmart for software engineering for killing allAmerican IT companies, and Infosys is NOT an American company.

It would be very sad that the market is dominated by ICCs like Infosys: they dominate the H1B visa with low salary and all we talented software engineers have to go to ICCs because of visas. The market is also controlled by these ICCs: all smart American engineers can’t beat ICC’s low price and have to risk loosing jobs.
